TFT economy: gold, interest and when to spend

The numbers come from high elo:

Set 18 Patch 18.5 77,232 high-elo games Games from 6 Oct to 20 Oct

Gold is what turns a good game into a great one: it lets you level up, roll the shop for units and upgrade your board. Economy isn’t about saving as much as possible, it’s about knowing when each coin is worth more in the bank and when it’s worth more spent.

Interest: why 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 matter

At the end of each round you earn 1 extra gold for every 10 you have saved, up to a maximum of 5 at 50 gold. That’s why the 10-gold thresholds matter more than the exact number: at 38 gold you get 3 interest, same as at 30. Spending those extra 8 doesn’t cost you interest; dropping from 30 to 29 does.

On top of interest, chaining wins or losses gives you extra streak gold. A loss streak can be a strategy if it lets you save up and hit a key moment with a lot of gold, but every loss costs health.

When to spend

How much gold the best players have left

Unspent gold at the end of the game across 77232 Platinum-to-Challenger matches, by final placement:

Gold left (average)10.06.87.57.97.17.28.312.6

Winners finish with 10.0 on average and last place with 12.6: in high elo almost nobody leaves with a big bank. Whoever wins ends the game with gold because there’s nothing left to spend it on; whoever dies with a lot of gold was holding it when it could still have saved them.

How TFT Coach helps

When it analyzes your games in My matches, if you were eliminated with 10 or more unspent gold it flags it as key to improve, and if you went down with an empty bank it counts it as something you did right. It also compares your final level with high elo players who finished in the same placement.
